An Unforgettable Diplomatic Journey: A Recap of Our Transformative 2024 New York MUN Experience

In April 2024, an inspiring group of students from across the globe embarked on a journey that went beyond typical academic experiences—an adventure at the Travel With Us: New York MUN program. These young leaders hailed from diverse backgrounds, including El Salvador, Colombia, and Costa Rica, bringing together perspectives and ideas that would shape their futures as global citizens.


From the bustling streets of Manhattan to the prestigious halls of the United Nations, every moment of this journey was carefully crafted to challenge, inspire, and empower these students. Let's dive into the highlights of our life-changing week in New York City.



The Journey Begins Even Before Travel


Before our students even set foot in New York City, they embarked on an academic journey that would set the stage for their success—the Zero-to-Diplomat Course. This comprehensive training program was designed to provide them with the essential skills needed to navigate the complexities of diplomacy. Through intensive sessions on public speaking, leadership, negotiation, and crisis management, the students transformed into confident, well-prepared delegates. They learned how to represent their assigned countries with authority and finesse, ensuring they could tackle any challenge that awaited them at the Model UN.


This course wasn't just about theory; it was about application. Students engaged in mock debates, practiced crafting position papers, and learned the nuances of diplomatic writing. By the time they completed the course, they had not only mastered the art of diplomacy but had also built a solid foundation of global knowledge. With this preparation, the excitement for the journey ahead grew, and they were eager to put their skills to the test in one of the most prestigious academic settings in the world.



Flying to New York: The Anticipation Builds


As the students boarded the plane, a wave of anticipation swept over them. For many, this was their first time traveling to New York City, a destination known for its towering skyscrapers, vibrant culture, and pivotal role in global affairs. The flight itself became an opportunity for reflection and bonding as students discussed their expectations, hopes, and strategies for the upcoming conference. They shared stories about their countries—El Salvador, Colombia, and Costa Rica—and how they planned to represent their national interests on a global stage.


The journey to New York wasn't just about getting from point A to point B; it was the beginning of a transformative experience. As the plane soared above the clouds, so did the students' excitement and curiosity. Every mile brought them closer to the heart of international diplomacy, where they would soon join over 2,000 delegates from around the world. The discussions during the flight turned from casual conversations to strategic planning, as students mentally prepared themselves for the intense debates that lay ahead.




Getting to Know the City: First Impressions of New York


Upon arrival in New York, the students were immediately struck by the city's unique energy. The bustling streets, the towering buildings, and the melting pot of cultures made it clear that they were in a place where ideas and opportunities intersected. Our first stops—Times Square and the Metropolitan Museum of Art—were more than just sightseeing opportunities. Times Square, with its relentless pace and dazzling lights, embodied the intensity and excitement of the city, while the Met offered a quiet moment of reflection amidst the chaos, showcasing the global cultural heritage that our students would soon be discussing in their debates.


As the students explored these landmarks, they began to see how the city itself was a classroom. The art at the Met told stories of history, culture, and human achievement—stories that mirrored the very issues they would soon debate. Walking through Central Park and visiting iconic sites like the Empire State Building, students started to connect their academic goals with the real world. These experiences not only familiarized them with New York but also reinforced the importance of understanding global contexts when addressing international issues.




Preparing Our Diplomats Live: On-the-Spot Coaching


While the sightseeing provided cultural enrichment, the heart of the trip was the hands-on preparation that happened throughout the city. Our impromptu MUN coaching sessions became a critical part of the experience, held in various locations from the comfort of the hotel to the peaceful corners of Central Park. These sessions allowed students to refine their strategies, practice their speeches, and receive real-time feedback from their mentors. The informal setting made the learning process more dynamic and responsive, adapting to the needs of each student as they prepared for the intense debates ahead.

The coaching wasn’t limited to structured sessions. It happened in conversations over meals, during bus rides, and even as students walked through the city. The goal was to integrate their academic training into every part of the experience, ensuring they were constantly thinking, learning, and growing. By the time the official conference began, our students were not just prepared—they were fully immersed in the role of a diplomat, ready to take on any challenge with confidence and skill.



Visiting the Japanese Permanent Mission: A Diplomatic Masterclass


A highlight of the trip was our visit to the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations. This was more than just a tour—it was a masterclass in diplomacy. We were deeply honored to be welcomed by Ms. Kasahara, Researcher/Adviser of the Permanent Mission of Japan, who delivered a compelling lecture on UN diplomacy and negotiation. Her insights provided our students with a deeper understanding of the complexities of international relations, offering them a rare glimpse into the inner workings of global diplomacy. The students were captivated by the opportunity to engage directly with a diplomat of such experience and caliber. They asked thoughtful questions, participated in discussions, and left the mission with a profound sense of purpose. This visit reinforced the idea that diplomacy is not just about policy—it’s about people, relationships, and the delicate balance of global interests. Armed with this knowledge, our students felt more prepared than ever to step into their roles at the UN Headquarters.



Touring the UN Headquarters: Where Diplomacy Comes to Life


Following our time at the Japanese Permanent Mission, we ventured into the heart of global diplomacy—the United Nations Headquarters. Walking through the halls where world leaders make decisions that shape the future, our students were in awe. The Security Council Chamber, the General Assembly Hall, and other key rooms within the UN provided a tangible connection to the abstract concepts they had studied. Here, diplomacy came to life, and our students could see the direct impact of the work they were about to engage in.


This tour was more than just an educational experience; it was an inspiration. Seeing the physical spaces where history is made gave our students a new level of respect for the role they were about to play in the Model UN. The experience solidified their commitment to representing their countries with honor and diligence, knowing that the discussions they were about to have mirrored those taking place in the very rooms they visited.



The Conference: Rising to the Challenge


When the Model UN Conference began, our students were ready. Over four days of intense debates, they represented their countries with grace, intelligence, and determination. The competition was fierce, with over 2,000 delegates from around the world, but our students stood out for their ability to navigate complex issues and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds. Every session was a test of their skills, pushing them to think critically, communicate effectively, and find solutions to global problems.

These achievements are a testament to their dedication and the rigorous preparation they undertook. Each award was earned through hours of research, strategic thinking, and passionate debate, and we couldn’t be more proud of their success.



A Proud Moment: Reflecting on Growth and Success


As we reflected on the incredible journey our students had undertaken, it became clear that the benefits of the Travel With Us: New York MUN experience extended far beyond the awards and recognition. The growth our students experienced was multifaceted, touching on personal, academic, and social dimensions that will have lasting impacts on their lives. This experience not only honed their skills as diplomats but also shaped them into more confident, empathetic, and globally-minded individuals.


One of the most significant areas of growth was in leadership and communication. Throughout the conference, our students were challenged to step outside their comfort zones, lead discussions, and articulate their ideas clearly and persuasively. This experience sharpened their public speaking skills and taught them the value of listening—an essential component of effective diplomacy. By working with peers from around the world, they learned how to build consensus, navigate disagreements, and lead with both authority and empathy. These are skills that will serve them well, not just in future Model UN conferences but in any leadership role they take on in life.


Moreover, the academic rigor of the experience cannot be understated. From extensive research on global issues to the strategic thinking required during debates, our students were pushed to think critically and creatively. They learned how to analyze complex problems from multiple perspectives, a skill that will be invaluable in their academic careers. The hands-on nature of the Model UN, combined with the knowledge gained through direct interactions with diplomats and real-world experiences, deepened their understanding of international relations and global governance. This intellectual growth will not only enhance their college applications but will also provide a strong foundation for future studies in fields such as political science, international relations, and law.


On a personal level, the experience fostered resilience, adaptability, and confidence. Navigating the challenges of the conference—whether it was managing time, overcoming setbacks in debates, or collaborating with peers from different cultures—helped our students develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. They learned to trust in their abilities and to persevere even when faced with difficulties. These qualities will undoubtedly contribute to their success in all areas of life, from academics to future careers.


Socially, the program created a unique opportunity for cultural exchange and global networking. The friendships and connections formed during the conference were not only enriching on a personal level but also opened doors to future collaborations. By interacting with students from different countries and backgrounds, our delegates gained a deeper appreciation for diversity and a broader understanding of the world. These connections, fostered through shared experiences and mutual respect, will likely continue long after the conference, providing a global network of peers and mentors that they can lean on in the future.



Finally, participating in the Travel With Us: New York MUN program helped our students cultivate a sense of global citizenship. They returned home with a stronger commitment to making a positive impact in their communities and the world at large. By engaging with pressing global issues and representing their countries on an international stage, they realized the power they have to contribute to real-world solutions. This sense of responsibility and purpose is perhaps the most profound takeaway from the experience, as it will guide their actions and decisions in the years to come.
