Global Refugee
& Migrant Crisis

OIM

The global refugee and migrant crisis stands as one of the most pressing humanitarian and political challenges of our time. This complex phenomenon, driven by factors including conflict, persecution, environmental degradation, and economic instability, presents multifaceted challenges to international governance. The debate centers on how best to protect the rights and ensure the well-being of vulnerable populations while simultaneously addressing the concerns of host nations regarding sovereignty, security, and resource allocation. This issue is particularly timely given the record numbers of displaced persons worldwide and the increasing politicization of migration in many regions.

Polarization arises from fundamentally divergent perspectives on state responsibility, burden-sharing, and the interpretation of international law. Some nations prioritize restrictive immigration policies and border security, emphasizing national interests and the potential strain on social services. Conversely, others advocate for a more rights-based approach, stressing the obligations of states to adhere to international conventions and provide safe passage and asylum. The discourse is further complicated by the rise of xenophobia and misinformation, which fuel social tensions and hinder the development of comprehensive and humane solutions. The OIM committee provides a crucial platform for learners to grapple with these complexities, fostering nuanced debate and exploring sustainable strategies for managing migration flows, protecting vulnerable populations, and promoting international cooperation.
