Inclusion of All Native Cultures in Legislation & Policy
SOCHUM
The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is a crucial committee of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on human rights, humanitarian affairs, and social matters. The goal of SOCHUM is to promote and enforce basic freedoms and ideals, ensuring the protection and advancement of human rights and social development globally. SOCHUM plays a vital role in addressing these issues, creating awareness, promoting international cooperation, and ensuring that the rights of indigenous peoples are respected and protected. Also it is essential to foster a more inclusive and equitable world, where all cultures are valued, respected, ensured of their rights and preserved. The exclusion of native cultures in legislation and policy leads to the loss of cultural heritage, environmental degradation, and economic disadvantages for indigenous communities.
Historically, indigenous communities have struggled to have their rights recognized and protected which leads to facing challenges related to land rights, cultural preservation, and political representation. The committee's main priority is focusing on different topics that may involve the inclusion of ethnic groups that may be present within each country. Through history, there have been different ethnic groups that were segregated and therefore, put aside when making policies for the well-being of the citizens of a particular country, this has caused many issues, such as the incapability of establishing an identity as a nation, and establishing a series of prejudices around a particular ethnic group. Many groups have recurred to different actions to make sure that their voices are being heard, such as participating in protests and international forums, while others have taken a more extremist view and have recurred to acts of terrorism. It is a relevant topic to address because it touches on fundamental human rights and social justice, and because it has the potential to create a more just and equitable society for all.
