Committee Overview

Armed conflict leaves behind not only human suffering but lasting ecological devastation: contaminated water systems, destroyed forests, oil spills, depleted biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions on a scale rivaling entire industrial sectors. From the burning oil fields of past Gulf wars to today's damaged nuclear and chemical infrastructure, war has become one of the most underreported drivers of environmental collapse and climate instability.

The United Nations Environment Assembly must confront the urgent need for environmental accountability in conflict and post-conflict settings. Delegates will explore the concept of ecocide as an international crime, mechanisms for environmental damage assessment, protection of ecosystems under international humanitarian law, and frameworks for ecological reconstruction. The committee will balance state sovereignty and security imperatives with the collective responsibility to safeguard the planet for future generations.
